  Recommended Papers and Publications

This list of academic papers and other publications are all excellent reading material for anyone consider the design and construction of a small mobile robot. I've read all the papers listed below (and many more not listed!), and I can recommend them with confidence. Most of the papers listed below use Adobe's free PDF format.

I've rated the papers for content and relevance to the course. My rating system is pretty simple: okay, good, and excellent. I'm not listing reference material that isn't useful, so you can be sure that your time won't be wasted.

General Robotics Papers

Will's Rating: Excellent!
IDEAL AND REAL SYSTEMS: A Study of Notions of Control in Undergraduates Who Design Robots
by Fred G. Martin, Epistemology and Learning Group, MIT Media Lab

Adobe PDF | 25 Pages | PDF file (224Kb)
Presented at the National Education Computing Conference, Boston, MA, June 1994.

Will says: This excellent paper discusses common conceptual problems undergraduate students have when designing and building small mobile robots. Dr. Martin presents his student's recurring inclination to build robots that will perform properly only under ideal conditions. Read this and understand what NOT to do.

Will's Rating: Excellent!
The Role of Learning in Autonomous Robots
by Rodney A. Brooks, MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab

Adobe PDF | 6 Pages | PDF file (181Kb)
Proceedings of the Fourth Annual Workshop on Computational Learning Theory (COLT '91), Santa Cruz, CA, August 1991

Will says: This excellent paper describes the behaviour-based approach to autonomous mobile robots, and examines four classes of learning problems associated with such robots. This is an introduction to subsumption behaviour architecture, more thoroughly examined in the book co-authored with A. Flynn.
